Beginnings

Updated: Apr 11, 2019

This is a bit of a test post. I want to see how the blog function works. I am busy setting up my website and am reminded of the beginnings of a client's journey. Connecting with how a new client might be feeling coming to meet a new therapist can be quite overwhelming. All of a client's longings and dreads will be amplified on that first visit. What will the therapist be like? Will i like them? What will I say? What if ...? Will they think i am ....? So many imaginings and it can be difficult to see the trees from the wood in those early days.

There are a few things that you can do to support you in your first visit. Firstly, I would recommend giving yourself time before and after your appointment to sit in your car and just breathe. Your therapist is trained to welcome you in a calm and steady way. They will help guide you through your first visit. This may sound crazy but it will get a lot easier as times go on. You may even look forward to it and to be fair there will also be times where you cannot be bothered of feel annoyed at having to turn up for an appointment. These are all natural responses. Remember, if you are sitting in a therapists room you have taken charge and made a huge step towards finding support. Well done.
